Ancient Greeks believed that before the creation of the universe, the world was in a state of nothingness, they referred to this concept as “χάος” (pronounced kháos).

Through the use of traditional and contemporary technologies, this collection aims to document the void of nothingness, which once a year, engulfs Greek Islands during their off-peak season.

The project was shot on the Greek Island of Kefalonia using an analogue Hasselblad Xpan camera and modern 360-Degree camera and offers an immersive perspective of Greece, which is unseen by frequenting tourists.

What exactly counts as human? And what exactly counts as nature? As humans overly pursue the beauty of urban construction on natural land, the stability of natural ecosystems is gradually being destroyed by human over-exploitation. For my project, I asked humans to hold up an image of a natural landscape and photograph it in a city that smells of steel and concrete. What happens next to this image of a natural landscape?

Eat with your ears

Close your eyes, and listen. When is the last time that you felt an irresistible urge to eat? The crispiness of chips, the buttery crumbles of biscuits between the teeth, the smooth and silky texture of chocolate melting in your mouth, chewiness of gummies… sometimes you binge, afterwards you purge. The cycle goes on from salty to sweet, fresh and cool to creamy and hot, crunchy to moist, fluffy to dense. Binge eating has been a common phenomenon given the smart inventions of chemical foods; capitalism has its way further when “healthy food” suggests not only one, but tons of choices: farm to table, from scratch, organic, certified, locally sourced. The industry has created binge eating, the social media reveals perfect body shapes, when binge eating turns into bulimia, they advertise to combat obesity and depression. What a yummy manipulation. So I have decided: “since I cannot stop binging, I will binge on milk and cereals and whole wheat thins.”

In this project, I experimented with recording devices to create a sense of “immersion” in food experience, including 2XLR microphones that represent the listeners’ left and right ear; pop filter to block out noise; Digital Audio Workspace (DAW) along with video editing software.

Heavy Heart

Screen Shot 2023-06-16 at 12.28.49 PM - Naomi Soquar

Heavy Heart is a multi-sensory installation that explores the connection between images, memory, and affect within personal family archives. Through a non-linear format, the video essay follows ordinary people with extraordinary stories who reflect on experiences of togetherness, loss, and dreams.  Building from Tina Campt’s research on haptic images, I suggest that images and memories can act in a call-and-response relationship as the construction of the image itself acts as a ‘call’ to evoke visceral ‘responses’ connected to memory. This installation invites the viewer to contemplate their relationship to images and how it has influenced their identity and knowledge in the communities to which they belong.

I wanted to trace the images of things that were attached to the original of consciousness, whose existence and my observation of them could be described as an unconditional occurrence. But when they intersect with photography, a certain presupposition is created. When confronted with such preconceptions I often fall into a kind of unconscious chaos, as is the norm in my life, and yes, I am always in chaos. Until one day a person who inspired me on my photographic path said to me, “You have to take the chaos, the future is going to be more pressing, so burning life.” I looked at the images again, and they seemed to make me accept the chaos.

Insert Coin to Continue

Insert Coin to Continue is a project about “third places”– a space that sits outside of work or the home, one built on shared communal experience; where the focus is play, not productivity. Like many other third places, arcades are at a crossroads, facing closures as technological changes and economic factors threaten their existence.

This series challenges their perceived obsolescence through documenting and celebrating the remaining arcades in the city, from repurposed warehouses to casino basements. Each photo aims to transport the viewer, encouraging them to place themselves in the arcade, getting lost among the bright lights and overwhelming sensory experience. The work is created using primarily analog techniques and printed on backlit durtatran material to replicate the tactile aura of each venue and machine.

Insert Coin to Continue is part of a larger body of work exploring the relationship between neoliberal economic ideology and its impact on communal spaces.

Wandering

Previous slide

For this set of photos, I was inspired by a Taiwanese folk song—Wondering A raspy voice with a simple guitar accompaniment. A female singer uses the lyrics to tell the story of her wandering from her home under the mountains to Taipei. Most people here are foreigners, seeking a sense of identity, but also accompanied by contradictions and pulls, encountering hypocritical people, sad things, and wanting to escape. Sometimes I want to escape into no man’s land. I want to stand in the wilderness and feel the wind and the sun, my mind becomes hazy and I can’t think about anything in its entirety. I can only passively accept the beautiful music and the cool breeze. That’s the feeling I’m trying to express

From Jamaica’s dub, to Detroit’s Drexicya to Sun Ra’s numerous works of psychedelic jazz and funk, Black sonic traditions have a rich offshoot rooted in futurism, and postmodern thought. This project situates itself in the rich histories of these sonic traditions. Using heavily effected, drums, synths, and bass instruments, I have attempted to create a sonic landscape that inspired by these traditions, invoking notions of cataclysm and drawing upon techniques from black electronic music.

This works focus on using cameraless photography to explore the relationship between humans and the environment. The work shows natural or man-made objects pro induced in the current surroundings as creative elements. The series of this project uses photogram techniques to take pictures which means placing garbage or digital negatives directly on top of the photosensitive paper for exposure. Viewers can see scattered and irregular objects in these brightly coloured series of works. These scattered translucent objects on the photographic paper are rubbish picked up from the beach in East Tilbury which is a village on the estuary that connects to the Thames. A part of the beach is also a former landfill, however. This landfill’s waste are going into the river with the tide, meanwhile, we also drink from the waters of the Thames.

Reality is equal for everyone in the world, something that exists objectively, who has some rules of his own, just like there are veins and bones in the body of an animal, gravity in the world, the Roche limit. In the midst of a city there are also streets, and alleyways, connecting the different subdivisions of the city. But people perceive things differently, and everyone feels the same thing differently, just as there are 10,000 Hamlets in 10,000 people. People are bound to carry their own feelings with them as they use their eyes or tools to record their exploration of the world, so can we say this: “Everything in the world that is built and produced by humans is a product of human feelings”. What we know in the process of knowing the world is also the product of belonging to the perceptions of others. The streets of the city are everywhere; they are like veins that connect the various areas of the city. Although these streets exist objectively, it may not be entirely consistent in each person’s perception.

I WAS HERE

Nowadays, many people spend a lot of their travel time on taking photos that are more in line with public aesthetics in order to post pictures that attract audiences on social media when they travel, and lose the meaning of photography in travel and the autonomy of shooting itself. In my opinion, this is influenced by cybernetics in communication science. Based on the black box method in cybernetics, I use a ccd cameras which cannot show images normally due to screen damage are taken as black box at every famous scenic spots and historic sites around the world to take pictures. Since this ccd camera still has the function of shooting except that the screen is damaged and the image cannot be seen, the picture in front of the lens can still be used as input. Therefore, I use this Ccd camera as a black box, and the places of interest in front of the lens are recorded into the camera as input. The act of imagining what the site should have looked like from audiences based on damaged images is output and feedback. At the same time, the camera was originally used as a tool for shooting, but it lost its meaning as a camera because it was damaged. It is as if people spend a lot of time travelling in order to take more aesthetically pleasing photos and thus gain more attention, while losing the meaning of photography in the journey itself.

To be determined

Previous slide

The topic of this project will be based on the Chinese creator goddess Nuwa as the main inspiration and element, and will revolve around a consideration of Transhumanism and posthuman-ism. In A HISTORY OF TRANSHUMANIST THOUGHT, Nick Bostrom summarises the attempts of human beings to usurp nature in many ways, from myths and legends, magic, religion and philosophy, as evidence of human beings’ ongoing attempts to empower themselves. This is why I wanted to combine traditional Chinese mythology with Transhumanism and posthuman-ism. The commonalities and contradictions between the myth of Nuwa’s creation and posthuman-ism allow this myth to be explored and used as an oriental element to represent posthuman-ism. Whereas early humans achieved their aspiration of omnipotence through the creation of gods, today humans are attempting to achieve it through technology. Personally, I think that the relationship between people and technology at this stage can be summed up in the words “creation” and “control”. In the process of creation, humans make technology as a tool more and more human, while in the process of control, they maintain the boundary between man and machine.

if (escape == true)

Previous slide
Next slide

In today’s digital era, where we often reduce ourselves to online profiles and communicate through emojis, we risk losing our connection with genuine emotions and real-life experiences. However, “if (escape == true)” is a puzzle game that defies this trend, suggesting the phenomenon of us losing the initiative. The objective for players is to break free from the digital realm and return to reality. At the beginning of the game, players are informed that the computer’s power button has been stolen, leaving them trapped in the digital world. Players must decipher digital emotions, contexts, and memes throughout the game to gather clues for solving puzzles and ultimately achieve their escape. It serves as a reminder to find a balance between the digital and tangible realms, encouraging us to reawaken our senses and cherish genuine connections in our lives.
