Memory Distortion

Previous slide
Next slide

The photographic series “Memory Distortion” is inspired by people’s memories and experiences in memory, such memories have completely different backgrounds in time and space, and memories of things constitute our imagination of the time and space that existed in the past. We can certainly move around in space at will. But strictly speaking, we can never go back to a point we reached before, because it is already another space in another dimension of time. After all, time can stretch and fold, but not to retreat.

Eat with your ears

Close your eyes, and listen. When is the last time that you felt an irresistible urge to eat? The crispiness of chips, the buttery crumbles of biscuits between the teeth, the smooth and silky texture of chocolate melting in your mouth, chewiness of gummies… sometimes you binge, afterwards you purge. The cycle goes on from salty to sweet, fresh and cool to creamy and hot, crunchy to moist, fluffy to dense. Binge eating has been a common phenomenon given the smart inventions of chemical foods; capitalism has its way further when “healthy food” suggests not only one, but tons of choices: farm to table, from scratch, organic, certified, locally sourced. The industry has created binge eating, the social media reveals perfect body shapes, when binge eating turns into bulimia, they advertise to combat obesity and depression. What a yummy manipulation. So I have decided: “since I cannot stop binging, I will binge on milk and cereals and whole wheat thins.”

In this project, I experimented with recording devices to create a sense of “immersion” in food experience, including 2XLR microphones that represent the listeners’ left and right ear; pop filter to block out noise; Digital Audio Workspace (DAW) along with video editing software.

Absent Presence

In a simulated canyon that does not exist in reality, are humans the audience of nature? How do we define the presence of humans and nature?

The project explores the relationship and boundaries between humans, nature and media, refuting the dichotomy of biological/non-biological, embodied/non-embodied existence.

In a future where human dominance is disintegrated, the human body is disintegrated or confined to a virtual natural environment by the screen, creating an eerie sense of participation in nature. As well as blurring the position of the viewer in the simulated landscape, humans are both the viewer and the watched of nature, exploring the long-standing dichotomy between humans and nature.

Primordial given

I wanted to trace the images of things that were attached to the original of consciousness, whose existence and my observation of them could be described as an unconditional occurrence. But when they intersect with photography, a certain presupposition is created. When confronted with such preconceptions I often fall into a kind of unconscious chaos, as is the norm in my life, and yes, I am always in chaos. Until one day a person who inspired me on my photographic path said to me, “You have to take the chaos, the future is going to be more pressing, so burning life.” I looked at the images again, and they seemed to make me accept the chaos.

Rainy season never leave

Previous slide
Next slide

A person’s life is made up of many moments, which are usually attached to certain carriers and will record many moments and memories, which will make things that change from time to time permanent. It rarely rains in my hometown, but it often rains in London. It turns out that I have mixed feelings about the rain in London, because it is rare for me, and it carries many memories for me. I have had pink hair since I was in London and I love it. But it also fades quickly, like all “moments”. It is an experience as much as the rain, I print the pink hair on paper, let them bend, deform, fade, I cannot change them or force them not to change. Because “instant” is “eternal”, but “instant” can never be “eternal”.

Mindful Disruption

Previous slide
Next slide

“Mindful disruption” refers to a concept that combines the principles of mindfulness and disruptive innovation. It involves approaching disruptions or changes in a conscious, intentional, and aware manner, with a focus on positive outcomes and sustainable transformation. Mindfulness, derived from Buddhist traditions, involves bringing one’s attention to the present moment, being aware of one’s thoughts, feelings, and surroundings without judgment. It is often practiced through meditation and other techniques to cultivate a state of heightened awareness and clarity. Disruptive innovation, on the other hand, refers to the process of introducing new products, services, or business models that significantly alter the existing market landscape. Disruptive innovations typically challenge traditional ways of doing things and often create new opportunities or reshape industries. The concept of mindful disruption brings these two ideas together. It encourages individuals and organisations to approach disruptions and innovations with a mindful mindset, emphasising qualities such as intention, awareness, and ethical considerations. By applying mindfulness to the process of disruption, one can navigate change more consciously and empathetically, minimising negative consequences and maximising positive outcomes.

It is a complex emotion often associated with the Korean people and their history. Han can be caused by various things, such as war, poverty, and oppression. It can also be caused by personal losses, such as the death of a loved one or the end of a relationship. Through the video and installation of Han, the artwork portrays a sense of the depth of Han emotions. This immersive media project invites viewers to experience the essence of Han, connecting with its profound emotional resonance in a visually captivating manner.

This work discovers and express feelings/ emotions by capturing nature. Nature has allowed me to ease my anxiety, and depression. It is a projection of internal feelings.

Therefore, capturing nature is not only a language as a simple sign, but a process of existence that requires replacing the whole being.

From Jamaica’s dub, to Detroit’s Drexicya to Sun Ra’s numerous works of psychedelic jazz and funk, Black sonic traditions have a rich offshoot rooted in futurism, and postmodern thought. This project situates itself in the rich histories of these sonic traditions. Using heavily effected, drums, synths, and bass instruments, I have attempted to create a sonic landscape that inspired by these traditions, invoking notions of cataclysm and drawing upon techniques from black electronic music.

Dancing With The Devil

Previous slide

My project stems from my previous bulimia nervosa. It made me deeply aware of the harm of addictive behavior.Whether it’s drug addiction, internet addiction, gambling, etc. These will repeatedly lead to a rapid increase and decrease in the frequency of dopamine in people. Any factor can tease these people’s brains, making them feel like they are possessed and completely out of control. So my video imitates the psychological state of people who become addicted. The picture is sometimes accelerated with bright colors, and sometimes slowed down with a dull and gloomy tone. By using the expression of glitch art, this can increase the sense of confusion and terror, making it more dramatic. Let the audience’s heart beat faster for a while ,then feel lost and empty at times, and want to watch again. To remind people to be vigilant about the temptation and danger of addictive behavior. And I hope that the addicted population can receive more care, support, and professional treatment.

Ghost Work

Previous slide
Next slide

Artificial intelligence has given rise to a new wave of workers, but compared to the Industrial Revolution era, this working class is almost invisible, akin to the existence of ghosts. Ghost workers enhance machine learning algorithms by performing repetitive tasks online such as image annotation and content moderation. Many workers have been concealed within the promotion of company automation and full automation, even replacing their identities in human society with a series of numbers. They are a marginalized workforce that is not protected by law or society. This project compiles a set of characteristics of ghost workers through extensive research and provides them to AI for visualizing their avatars and virtual work environments. The characters in green suits resemble movie green screen costumes, allowing them to be easily identified and removed by software. The majority of ghost workers’ tasks involve annotating images gathered from the internet and using them as input to train AI models. In other words, they train models with their own work, creating images as if in a Möbius loop, gradually revealing the hidden parts.

One path of absurdity

Previous slide

My works are rooted in my training in photography as a documentary and art medium, which investigates the topic of life, time, and loneliness, exploring the relationship among image, text, and Experience of life. My final work has two parts, photography and video, and The main topic of my work is loneliness. I start from the “society of spectacle”(by Guy Debord). I work on the topic of people that are controlled, or oppressed by society, and loneliness. What I’m doing now is more about myself, showing the same thing, about that People can feel lonely in society, even if there are people everywhere. The second part is a video that reflects my understanding of the “experience of life”. After the first part of the photography, I developed the relationship between loneliness and life. So I realize that nihilism and existence, both are in my life experience. Sometimes humans just move forward in life in a way that is powerless but necessary, whether they know the reason or not.

Encounters with strangers

Human encounters encompass a blend of chance and inevitability, wherein the beginning and culmination of each relationship hold their unique destinies. The trajectory of human connections often eludes our control or foresight, leaving us as mere observers of their unfolding. Within this realm, numerous unforeseen twists and turns abound, constituting one of its most captivating facets. It was my intention to explore the pathways of destiny by forging a bond with a stranger, recognizing that the progression of this relationship rested upon the actions of that unfamiliar individual. Along this journey of connection, I also experienced a diverse array of energetic responses from others, conveyed through words or fleeting eye contact.

In my work there are a total of five stories about participants who were sexually harassed in public. I have presented all of their experiences in a collage and in text form in a zine. Through my work, I hope to help more women overcome their helplessness after being sexually harassed and to help more women realise that they need more courage to fight back when they are sexually harassed.
