Eat with your ears

Close your eyes, and listen. When is the last time that you felt an irresistible urge to eat? The crispiness of chips, the buttery crumbles of biscuits between the teeth, the smooth and silky texture of chocolate melting in your mouth, chewiness of gummies… sometimes you binge, afterwards you purge. The cycle goes on from salty to sweet, fresh and cool to creamy and hot, crunchy to moist, fluffy to dense. Binge eating has been a common phenomenon given the smart inventions of chemical foods; capitalism has its way further when “healthy food” suggests not only one, but tons of choices: farm to table, from scratch, organic, certified, locally sourced. The industry has created binge eating, the social media reveals perfect body shapes, when binge eating turns into bulimia, they advertise to combat obesity and depression. What a yummy manipulation. So I have decided: “since I cannot stop binging, I will binge on milk and cereals and whole wheat thins.”

In this project, I experimented with recording devices to create a sense of “immersion” in food experience, including 2XLR microphones that represent the listeners’ left and right ear; pop filter to block out noise; Digital Audio Workspace (DAW) along with video editing software.

Absent Presence

In a simulated canyon that does not exist in reality, are humans the audience of nature? How do we define the presence of humans and nature?

The project explores the relationship and boundaries between humans, nature and media, refuting the dichotomy of biological/non-biological, embodied/non-embodied existence.

In a future where human dominance is disintegrated, the human body is disintegrated or confined to a virtual natural environment by the screen, creating an eerie sense of participation in nature. As well as blurring the position of the viewer in the simulated landscape, humans are both the viewer and the watched of nature, exploring the long-standing dichotomy between humans and nature.

Heavy Heart

Screen Shot 2023-06-16 at 12.28.49 PM - Naomi Soquar

Heavy Heart is a multi-sensory installation that explores the connection between images, memory, and affect within personal family archives. Through a non-linear format, the video essay follows ordinary people with extraordinary stories who reflect on experiences of togetherness, loss, and dreams.  Building from Tina Campt’s research on haptic images, I suggest that images and memories can act in a call-and-response relationship as the construction of the image itself acts as a ‘call’ to evoke visceral ‘responses’ connected to memory. This installation invites the viewer to contemplate their relationship to images and how it has influenced their identity and knowledge in the communities to which they belong.

Han (한)

한 is a media project that explores the theme of ‘Han’, a distinct emotional state in Korean culture. Han is a complex and multifaceted emotion in Korean culture that encompasses a deep sense of unresolved sorrow, longing, and resilience in the face of adversity. It is a complex emotion often associated with the Korean people and their history. Han can be caused by various things, such as war, poverty, and oppression. It can also be caused by personal losses, such as the death of a loved one or the end of a relationship. Through the video and installation of Han, the artwork portrays a sense of the depth of Han emotions. This immersive media project invites viewers to experience the essence of Han, connecting with its profound emotional resonance in a visually captivating manner.

From Jamaica’s dub, to Detroit’s Drexicya to Sun Ra’s numerous works of psychedelic jazz and funk, Black sonic traditions have a rich offshoot rooted in futurism, and postmodern thought. This project situates itself in the rich histories of these sonic traditions. Using heavily effected, drums, synths, and bass instruments, I have attempted to create a sonic landscape that inspired by these traditions, invoking notions of cataclysm and drawing upon techniques from black electronic music.

Under Surveillance

Previous slide
Next slide

Surveillance, with its objective character, is used to record and reflect reality. However, this type of machine perspective is deceptive while extending our senses, creating a barrier between vision and cognition by simulating our environment, enveloping us in a vast system of simulacra. They are everywhere, all-seeing, like a God-like gaze, constantly shaping and consolidating the objective world we see. Under Surveillance reconstructs the living places we take for granted through the lens of simulated surveillance, revealing the authoritative role played by machines and exploring the infinite possibilities hidden behind the barrier.

“Resurrection of Osiris” is an adventure game made on the Bitsy platform, inspired by the ancient Egyptian myth of Osiris. The original Egyptian king Osiris was murdered by his brother Seth. Seth cut his body into pieces and scattered them all over Egypt. Osiris’ wife Isis later found the pieces and used magical power to bring him back to life. The game takes the player into the mysterious world of ancient Egypt through pixel art. Players take on the role of an adventurer who interacts with NPCs, collects pieces of Osiris scattered throughout ancient Egypt and solves puzzles to complete the game. During the adventure, players will encounter mythical creatures from ancient Egypt, as well as NPC characters with important clues and knowledge. Temporal Fragments

Previous slide
Next slide

The work explores the fragmented experience of time and the interplay between visual representation and identity. Drawing inspiration from the rich history of classical Islamic art and its mathematical foundations, the artist employs Islamic geometric patterns to highlight the connection between historical artistic principles and media art. Using visual techniques such as fragmented imagery, glitch aesthetics, and abstract forms, the work visualises the multidimensional nature of time in the digital age. Additionally, by referring how contemporary images arise from non-visual data, such as code or text, through specific algorithms, the artist tries to blur the boundaries between the visual and the abstract. Through the interplay of visual techniques and historical inspirations, the work invites viewers to contemplate complexities of our digitally influenced temporal experiences and how they shape our understanding of self and identity in the contemporary world.

To be determined

Previous slide
Next slide

The topic of this project will be based on the Chinese creator goddess Nuwa as the main inspiration and element, and will revolve around a consideration of Transhumanism and posthuman-ism. In A HISTORY OF TRANSHUMANIST THOUGHT, Nick Bostrom summarises the attempts of human beings to usurp nature in many ways, from myths and legends, magic, religion and philosophy, as evidence of human beings’ ongoing attempts to empower themselves. This is why I wanted to combine traditional Chinese mythology with Transhumanism and posthuman-ism. The commonalities and contradictions between the myth of Nuwa’s creation and posthuman-ism allow this myth to be explored and used as an oriental element to represent posthuman-ism. Whereas early humans achieved their aspiration of omnipotence through the creation of gods, today humans are attempting to achieve it through technology. Personally, I think that the relationship between people and technology at this stage can be summed up in the words “creation” and “control”. In the process of creation, humans make technology as a tool more and more human, while in the process of control, they maintain the boundary between man and machine.

Archive 2023 - Stories of My Life with AI

Previous slide
Next slide

This project, conceived and created over the first half of 2023, started with the concept of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) archive, which I then documented over a period of several months.

In the first part, the anonymous artist author presents her daily conversations, practices and life with ChatGPT as informative visual images. These fragmented recordings present the possibilities and potential problems of AI, a giant and complete intelligent system reflected through the lives and existence of distinct, insignificant individuals.

Another part of the work is a video essay, in which the AI speaks from their perspective about the archive, recounting its creation over the same period of time. It includes details of events from the AI’s point of view, as well as the AI’s flirtations with and comments on human behaviour.

This archive, which mixes memory and truth, blurring the boundaries between the private and the public, explores the hot topic of AI in 2023, how it is slowly entering the public eye and influencing action, throwing up the question of how humans will live with AI technology in the future.

In my work there are a total of five stories about participants who were sexually harassed in public. I have presented all of their experiences in a collage and in text form in a zine. Through my work, I hope to help more women overcome their helplessness after being sexually harassed and to help more women realise that they need more courage to fight back when they are sexually harassed.

if (escape == true)

Previous slide
Next slide

In today’s digital era, where we often reduce ourselves to online profiles and communicate through emojis, we risk losing our connection with genuine emotions and real-life experiences. However, “if (escape == true)” is a puzzle game that defies this trend, suggesting the phenomenon of us losing the initiative. The objective for players is to break free from the digital realm and return to reality. At the beginning of the game, players are informed that the computer’s power button has been stolen, leaving them trapped in the digital world. Players must decipher digital emotions, contexts, and memes throughout the game to gather clues for solving puzzles and ultimately achieve their escape. It serves as a reminder to find a balance between the digital and tangible realms, encouraging us to reawaken our senses and cherish genuine connections in our lives.
